How to Recover a Stalled AI Task Without Duplicating It

Practical guides from the team building Staffmor.

When an AI task stalls, check the original request before you send another one. A request is saved, accepted, working or finished, and each of those calls for a different next step. Sending the same request three more times does not speed anything up. It gives you four tasks whose state you don't know.

The four states

  • Saved: the office recorded your request. This alone does not prove pickup or work started.
  • Accepted: the original request has a pickup receipt; it is not a finished answer.
  • Working: the task is underway.
  • Result: an answer or file is back in the original conversation.

A spinner is not a state. Neither is a message that says "on it." Look for which of the four the request has actually reached.

Write down what you know

A made-up example: you asked for a workshop arrival checklist. The request shows as saved. No result has come back, and you closed your AI app an hour ago. Nothing suggests anyone started it.

Keep the original conversation, the status it shows, the time, and any draft you had not sent. Those four things are the whole case.

What to do in each case

  • Saved, not picked up: open the session it needs and have it check for the work. With Claude Code, keep the session open and tell it "Check Staffmor for work."
  • Working: leave it. A second copy now competes with the first.
  • You are not sure it was delivered: look at what was saved before you retry.
  • A clear error: fix the thing the error names, then use the recovery option the office shows you.
  • A result is there: open it and review it. It may have been finished all along.

In the example, reopen the supported local session and have it check the original request. Confirm pickup and the returned result before calling it recovered; do not create a replacement.

The request, if you need to ask

The request: "Check my original arrival-checklist request and tell me what state it is in. Continue that work if you can. Keep the original request and my draft. If you can't tell what happened, say what can be checked before anything is retried. Do not create a replacement task or reset the office."

The mistake to watch for

Resetting is not a first step. Reset the office, pair again or clear the cache and you may throw away the conversation and the draft you were trying to save, without touching the actual cause, which is often something simpler, such as a closed session.

The other mistake is treating time as proof. A request that has been "working" for two hours has not, for that reason, finished. Check it.

Keep the story with the task

Note why it stalled, what you did and what came back. Leave the failed attempt in the record. Next time the same thing happens you have a record to compare.

New to Staffmor? Set up your office with Codex or Claude Code and an empty folder. Use your own supported AI account and approve the download, office activation and local folder/network access during setup. Claude Code pickup is manual; keep that local session open.
